SARA TIAN (田园)

Artist & designer behind “Charred” concept (and creator of charcoal-based artworks)

Tell us more about yourself

“I’m a Chinese-born artist and designer based in Antwerp, with a Master’s in Visual Communication Design from the Hubei Institute of Fine Arts. My work has always circled around materiality, texture and the quiet power of natural elements. Living and working in Belgium has given me the space to merge tradition and innovation and to ask: what happens when a material carries memory as deeply as meaning?”

About your art

“Charcoal fascinates me because it survives: cave drawings still breathe after 30 000 years. I came to it almost by accident, by a bonfire one evening: I pressed the blackened tip of a stick onto wood and understood how art begins. Not with perfect tools, but what the earth offers.

My pieces invite you to pause, feel the surface, connect with something elemental and organic. The flightcase that uses charred wood is an extension of that thought: it’s a functional object, yes, but one that holds visible traces of fire, of transformation, of nature’s rawness.”

Tell us about the concept

“In this collection I draw on my passion for charcoal, the raw, humble material, one of the first marks humans ever made. I use it on wood, on paper, on surfaces where its presence hints at fire, transformation and time. The flightcase built with charred wood becomes both container and object: it holds your world while wearing its own story of burn and renewal.”
